Diversify Your Sources of Revenue and Create Stability for Your Agency

A mentor of mine, Andrea J. Lee, wrote a classic called "Multiple Streams of Coaching Income", which inspired me to explore how my agency Visify and other agencies have diversified our income streams. 

If you are like most agency owners, you spend a lot of time creating proposals, responding to RFPs, attending pitch meetings… you know the drill.

What I’m going to share with you today is not the way to end all of that (see my other post on this), but it is a way to diversify your business away from total reliance on what I call “done for you” services. Done for you services are where when you sell stuff, you have to do stuff - like graphic or web design, marketing, SEO, copywriting, etc.

Four (Subtly) Toxic Partners - And How To Detoxify Them

One year, almost to the day, after joining a certain startup as a partner and founder, I was asked out to a drink by my business partner and co-founder.

We had grabbed a drink many times over the past couple years since we met, but I could tell from his tone that today’s drink was different. In fact, today was the day that he would tell me my “services were no longer needed”.

You see, we had just received a second round of funding and as the “gray hair” in this tech startup (I was 44 at the time, so yeah), my role was apparently obsolete. I was kept around just long enough to get us to funding - it had gotten that bad.

Will You Lead or Will You Follow?

I am going to take a guess that when you saw that word, you instantly thought of the behemoth founded by Jeff Bezos rather than the jungle or the largest river in the world.  

It is a true testament to how expansive and successful Amazon has become. With the recent purchase of Whole Foods, Amazon continues to grow and innovate itself in brand new ways.  

If you jump in the time machine back to 1995, though, you would find a whole different Amazon (and way too many people wearing stonewashed jeans). It’s almost hard to remember that Amazon, when it launched, only sold books.

Books. On paper.

Fast forward and Amazon now is the “everything and anything” store and that is because of the vision - and risk-taking - of Jeff Bezos.

Client Number One

Do you remember the thrill of getting your first client?

If you are an entrepreneur, small business owner or otherwise sell to clients, I know you do.

You remember it in as much detail as you remember other big transformational moments in your life, maybe even more.

Because that first client transforms your hobby or your passion into a business.

That first client validates all the hard work, the patience, the budgeting, the training.

That first client makes everything real.

I signed my very first client as an entrepreneur in 1996. A huge company in the oil industry data analysis business (yeah, that’s a thing) hired this eager 20-something with no experience to build their very first website.

They paid me $1,500 down, which I used to buy my first computer (yep, until then I was working on a computer borrowed from a friend) … and I got to work hand-coding HTML and creating images in Photoshop.

What Is (Really) Stopping You?

When they are about to make a big investment in their business, most people think:

“I’m a smart person… What if I hold off and try to do it myself first instead?”

I hear this all the time in sales conversations.

What they often conveniently forget is that even when trying it themselves “worked” before (which it rarely did), it took them way longer than it should have. (While other opportunities in their business and life were sidelined.)

Most times, instead of “trying”, what they really did was sit on that great idea for a bit longer… and end up not doing anything.

Looking back at those missed opportunities, most people will realize that it came down to a lack of trust.

Not a lack of trust in the one offering the opportunity, but lack of trust in themselves.

Put another way… There are two kinds of people…
